Please allow me to introduce myself!  My name is Rick Asensio, I was named Roderick but only ever use that formal handle on official documents. Teachers used to use it when I was in trouble when I was a kid in primary school.

I was born and grew up in Sydney, Australia but now live in the gorgeous village of Leura in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales where my wife Caroline and I have lived for the last 40 years…..so I think we may just have become locals!

I have spent the majority of my professional life as a registered nurse caring for children with an intellectual and physical disability, mainly severely disabled. I also spent considerable time as a registered nurse in acute psychiatry and aged care. Wonderful years indeed!

To everyone’s shock I threw myself out of the boat at age 42 and completed a Bachelor of Horticultural Science degree at Western Sydney University and from that time onward have worked in hands-on horticulture (parks and gardens), plant production (nursery/propagation) and natural resource management (bush regeneration/ecological restoration).

I have now happily retired and have returned to my old habits of being a night owl and do an enormous amount of reading etc. quite late in the evening now I don’t have to be up at ridiculously early hours to head off to work!

It gives me all the pleasure in the world to give you my Wendy and the Wishing Cat…….so I invite you all to come flying with Wendy, Mysty and me!

What Inspired Me To Write About Wendy?

Illustrations by my dearest friend Marilou Palazon

This book was actually written a fair while ago while I was at home quite sick and I remember it was like automatic writing-it just poured out of me with little or no stopping!

I loved the concept of a wonderful person, Wendy who went on to become more fabulous and understanding of how the world ticks all under the care of a wise, mysterious talking, flying cat.

I believe that some of the most profound change in a persons’ life can occur in the blink of an eye but we must be prepared to soar into the darkness and keep our heart, eyes and mind open!

The one thing I hope comes across in the book is something I’m a bit obsessed with and that is my commitment to painting a visual and moving picture with words!

The lovely thing is that I have also included fantastic illustrations by my dearest friend Marilou Palazon who had the power to take my thoughts and words and create the most perfect pictures to accompany my story.

From the bottom of my heart it has been one of the most humbling, euphoric and fantastic experiences of my life to offer all you kids (children and adults) my book!

I dedicate this book to my wife Caroline.

Thank you all and please enjoy!
